Volunteer Recognition Award was given to Nik Nikzaban wheelchair marathon athlete, his trainer Lisa Docherty and his supporter and friend, Bob Milward in recognition of their dream of completing a 24 hour endurance marathon, and the effort they put into making it come true. The event made a huge impact on the community raising over $11,000 for North Shore Disability Resource Centre. As a build up to the Marathon event, John Neumann coordinated and facilitated a Disability Awareness Program at Handsworth Secondary School, involving volunteers who spoke about their experiences as students with disabilities and barriers and issues they faced in the school system, specifically trying to make friends. The event led Nik to receive a Guiness World Record award for travelling the greatest distance of 124.861 kilometres within 24 hours by a person using a wheelchair. Nik continues to reach out to people with his message of self-belief and reminds them “The will power to accomplish something is there, and physical disability does not mean powerlessness.” The volunteer contribution honoured by this award was multilayered. It recognized the statements the event made to the community about the importance and value of collaborative teamwork, having dreams for abetter future, being open to possibilities andexploring options, and the power of self-beliefand commitment in making dreams real.
